Yesterday was pretty good, adjusted for what constitutes “good” right now. It was much better, at any rate, than the day prior and the day prior to that one. It wasn't warm exactly, but a very manageable 48 degrees. The sky was clear and the sun was glorious.
We took an hour-long walk, which felt much less grim and Soviet than it had earlier in the week. Everyone and their dog – literally everyone and their dog – was outside. We all gave each other a wide berth of course but at times it necessitated walking in the middle of the street. We probably saw several dozen people! It was nice to see them, even from afar.
A sad story with a happy ending: Last Friday we tried to order a pizza from our favorite neighborhood place, but everyone else had the same idea and the wait was more than two hours. Normally I pride myself on not minding their long waits, but that is because we can do it a few doors down at the wine bar. That is obviously not an option right now, so we didn't have pizza on Friday. But we did have it last night!
In our house, we refer to any type of dip – chip dip, hummus, whatever – as dippies. (This is 100% my husband's fault.) When we order pizza from this place, we always request two small ramekins of marinara sauce, and that is how I always say it when I'm ordering: "I'd like two small sides of marinara." But because I have sustained a kind of brain damage from living in this hellscape I very, very nearly said "And I’d also like dippies" to the woman on the phone.
I caught myself in time but what came out was extremely tortured: "Can I, also, order...uh...two small, like, side...cups? Of marinara?" And then, because I didn't sound ridiculous enough, I felt compelled to explain to the woman on the phone about how we call it dippies and I'd almost said it out loud! To her! Haha!!
She responded, "Oh, I probably would have just thought you meant creamy garlic sauce!" So obviously now I have to order that next time.
I’m still on a Twitter diet. It just too easily turns my phone and then subsequently my brain into a doom machine. I miss the jokes and funny dog videos but everything else is too much at the moment. I get the daily coronavirus updates from The Washington Post and that is just going to have to do for the time being. For now, I will focus on pizza.
