Well it finally happened, I skipped a day of sending this newsletter. I realized this sometime around 4pm, still early enough to send in my opinion (I do what I want), but I was too tired and too stupid to manage it.
The reason I was so stupid: my old friend, puppy-related sleep deprivation. Recovery, which had been sailing along so smoothly that I dared let myself think it would be “easy,” crashed and burned in spectacular fashion on Sunday afternoon and evening. The puppy seemed basically okay but then began to have remarkably vivid gastrointestinal issues, which persisted overnight and meant no sleep for me! It was pouring rain outside so we had to resort to the training pads again and let’s just skip the rest of the details. Suffice to say it was me, cleaning the floor and crying at 4am, while a very confused and probably not very chipper puppy ran around making more messes.
At some point she settled down and we both slept about an hour, but then she woke up, barfed, and looked at me like FIX IT. So we went back to the vet.
She’s mostly been better since yesterday afternoon but woof. I was up with her again this morning from around 4am to 5:30 and wow I didn’t enjoy it. I look forward to her schedule and her guts getting back on track soon. (By the way if you were wondering about the Suitical I am still a big fan and this house is now a NO-CONE ZONE.)
My husband gallantly made us dinner last night. He is by far the better cook, because he actually cooks, whereas I more follow recipes. We had salmon and some lemony penne with roasted asparagus and I served myself two large alcohols and it was very good.
The salmon was like a little surprise treat. I had forgotten we even had it in the freezer. A few years ago I bought a case of salmon through our CSA and for months I felt rich as Croesus with that stash in my freezer; I miss those days but also probably a case of salmon is a bit much for two people with no extra freezer sitting around. Anyway in late February, when word began to trickle around the internet that we might be looking at a lockdown situation, I did a little pre-pandemic shopping and in that haul was a package of frozen salmon. And there it has been sitting all this time!
Cool story I know but this is day 62. Break me a fucking give. (That’s an Anthony Lane deep cut for you.)
