On this day 484 days ago Anne Boleyn was executed, having been railroaded to her death by a number of powerful men with agendas, among them her husband, her father, her brother, and her uncle. Absent the ambition of these dudes she would not have had this sad end. They put her there.
I hate what happened to Anne in her lifetime, and I hate what has happened to her since. Think about what you learned in school or how she’s portrayed in popular culture. Now sit with the notion that almost none of that is true. Every year on Anne Boleyn Day I think about her a lot. You can read more about her on this site.
Anyway!
Yesterday was an okay day. I actually got work done. The puppy was not completely rotten. Dinner was super easy and we ate it in peace while the dogs either snoozed or gnawed on approved gnawables. I finished watching the remaining available episodes of Run, which was greatly improved by the appearance of Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a gay American taxidermist. For a Monday, it was not bad.
I also finally ordered another set of sheets – I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned here that we switched to a Nordic (or maybe it’s Scandinavian? whatever) bedding approach (king fitted sheet, two twin top sheets, two duvets), which has improved our sleeping experience 150%. During the time that we were experimenting with this I’ve just been cobbling together whatever sheets are available from old sets or sets we’d otherwise use in our guest rooms. It worked fine but it drives me crazy. It makes me feel like a hobo and my linen closet is chaos. Now we’ll have two complete and matching bougie Euro sheet sets and I’ll be able to relax.
I’m trying to change my Tuesday latitude by taking the older dog to school and finishing up some work in advance of a Wednesday deadline, which will be vastly preferable to the oh shit oh shit oh shit scramble cycle I feel like I’ve been stuck in for weeks. I don’t ever recall feeling this busy when I actually had places to go, but “unprecedented times” blah blah blah.
I’ve no idea what we’ll have for dinner tonight but I made the cheddar and scallion scones this morning, having forgotten again to put together bread dough. At some point, before it gets too warm to do so, I’d like to make Smitten Kitchen’s updated bolognese recipe; god knows I have the ability to simmer something on the stove for three or four hours these days. Even a hyper puppy would give me the occasional break to stir and add water.
