Yesterday two things happened: My new nephew was born and I. Finished. The. Quilt!!
We were all surprised about the baby. I mean, we were expecting him but not until the first week of January. But he was like “hey guess what” and now he is here and he is just lovely. We don’t know when we can see him because of *waves hands* but once they are home we might be able to mask up and go peek at him through a window or something.
I was able to finish hand-sewing the binding on my niece’s quilt yesterday in spite of what might be the worst headache I have ever had, and I washed it and folded it so I can drive it over to my brother- and sister-in-law in a couple of days. There are a lot of crooked seams on the quilt (it’s rustic!) and in retrospect, I can see that I should have added a border around it, but I love it very much. I really have enjoyed the process of quilting and I am glad my pandemic sewing machine was not a foolish purchase.
Next up is a unicorn quilt for my older niece, who I hope is not over unicorns when she turns five in early April.
My husband and I are not really getting each other gifts for Christmas this year. Normally I hate this sort of cop-out, but really, there is nothing I need or want. We are giving money to the food bank and doing Operation Santa Claus, and I am going to pay for my parents’ new upstairs carpet (although they don’t know that yet), and that is basically it aside from our nieces and nephews. We’re going to make beef Wellington and drink champagne and enjoy not working, and the dogs will go to camp for a couple of days right after Christmas.
I am going to buy myself one thing, which is an online marketing strategy course from an (online for-profit division of an) Ivy League school. More than anything I am just bored, but I also feel like even my (throat-clearing sounds) years of experience aren’t exactly inspiring the kind of vocational reverence I had hoped for. My job is good, my freelance pipeline is robust, but some people need a piece of paper. What can you do!
