I trimmed my quilt on Saturday at long last. I didn’t start on the binding, though, because I haven’t decided what to use. I’ve ordered…mmmmm let’s say three? yards of fabric? None of which seem quite right. Realistically speaking this is a practice quilt and it doesn’t really matter, but also I don’t want it to look janky, so I am still deciding.
Life has been a ride since Friday, a day that included the bad news about Ruth Bader Ginsburg and also my first ever jury summons. I have already postponed the jury summons, which naturally was for the week we will be out of town, but I would have preferred to take my lumps w/r/t jury duty and postponed instead the ruination of the Supreme Court and sundry of my civil rights, lol but not really!!!
I got the dogs fecked off to school Saturday morning without guilt. In a normal timeline, with normal dogs, I would happily have them home on weekends. In…whatever this is, I need the time. I did finally unpack and put away my new glassware. We also took a walk, as this time of year offers the best walking weather. On Saturday night, snugged down in the big couch with the puppy, I ordered some new soft clothes with which to winterize my carcass. Yesterday I baked cookies for the first time in months. It pains me to say I am a secret IT’S FALL Y’ALL person, and while you won’t find me having much to do with pumpkin spice anything, I do love a good sweater and a bowl of chili.
Yesterday I started watching Challenger: The Final Flight and while I will not say I am “enjoying” it for obvious reasons, it is well done. I am the right age to have a lot of space shuttle-specific memories, which include being herded into the school cafeteria to sit on the floor and watch the first Columbia launch. I learned about the Challenger disaster when I returned to science class after lunch and our teacher, Mrs. Fabian, said “The space shuttle with the teacher on it? Yeah, it blew up,” as she nonchalantly distributed handouts.
It’s hard to watch the documentary for a lot of reasons, not least of which is the America, Fuck Yeah! narrative that pervades it. People were so fucking amped about the space shuttle! I can’t think of anything else that compares now.
